At the December 2009 Tribute to Margaret Gray, Galen Biery Jr., son of late historian Galen Biery, told us he had rescued a box of letters from Miss Gray's home. Galen was helping his father clean out Miss Gray's home after her death. Headed for the dump, these letters had been saved, but forgotten in a garage in Maple Falls for almost 40 years.
In January 2010, Galen presented these letters to Brian Griffin and Neelie Nelson. Most exciting is that many of the letters are from Anna to Will! One letter includes beautiful fabric for her wedding dress and travelling suit.
There are 157 letters which span the following years:
-- 1888, 1889 and 1890 - before Will left for his adventures to the Northwest
-- 1891 and 1892 - up to Will and Anna's marriage in June 1892.
-- 1915 - When Will had returned to settle the estate of his mother in Mount Pleasant Iowa
The authors are currently photographing each of these letters and will provide excerpts of these letters on this website. When the project is complete they will be donated to the Washington State Archives: Northwest Region for the Gray Family Special Collection.
THANK YOU GALEN!
